Residents and businesses across parts of the Ashanti Region are expected to enjoy improved and more stable electricity supply after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) commissioned 37 new distribution transformers in the region.
The project, undertaken by ECG’s Ashanti West Region, forms part of a nationwide effort by the Ministry of Energy and ECG to upgrade ageing and overloaded electricity infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for power.
According to ECG, the exercise cost more than GH¢10.9 million and included:
- Upgrading old transformers
- Installing additional transformers in high-demand areas
- Extending high-tension and low-voltage lines to several communities
The transformers have been installed in areas including Ahinsan, Abuakwa, Adum, Danyame, Kokoben, Bibiani, Suame, and Offinso districts.
Beneficiary communities include:
- Trede SHS area
- Kodie Apagya
- Nkawie Pakala
- Hemang
- Bantama Race Course Market
- Pakyi No. 1
- Esaaso
- Buoho
- Adiebeba
- Bronikrom
- Kokoso
- Edwenase near the Goil Filling Station
Speaking on the project, ECG Ashanti West Regional General Manager, Ing. George Amoah, explained that many transformers in the affected communities had exceeded capacity, leading to frequent outages, low voltage, and phase interruptions.
He disclosed that ECG upgraded several transformers from 100kVA to 200kVA and from 200kVA to 315kVA. In some busy communities, two 315kVA transformers were installed to meet rising electricity demand.
According to him, the investment will:
- Reduce system losses
- Improve voltage stability
- Enhance operational efficiency
- Increase customer satisfaction through reliable electricity supply
Regional Engineer for Ashanti West, Ing. Emmanuel Osei Amoako, described the project as a major step in strengthening power distribution infrastructure in the fast-growing Ashanti Region.
He added that Kumasi and surrounding communities continue to experience rising electricity demand due to rapid urbanisation and business growth.
Ing. Amoako further revealed that ECG has already replaced 36 faulty transformers in areas such as:
- Twedie
- Patasi Police Depot
- Afia Kobi SHS
- Denkyemuoso White House
- Ampabame Hills
He also announced that approval has been secured for the installation of an additional 35 transformers in communities where existing equipment is nearing full capacity.
ECG used the opportunity to caution the public against illegal electricity connections and interference with ECG installations. Residents were urged to report such activities to the police or the nearest ECG office.
Customers were also encouraged to use ECG’s digital payment platforms, including the ECG PowerApp and shortcode *226#, as the company continues its transition to a fully cashless payment system.
