Ghana has launched a digital platform called Marrify, allowing members of the public to verify marriage and divorce records, as well as check registered marriage officers, venues and licensed Imams.
The platform was launched in Accra on August 28 by Marry Right Ghana Limited in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
Marrify functions as a searchable marriage and divorce registry covering ordinance, customary and Islamic marriages. Users can search using details such as names, spouse names, towns, churches, denominations, certificate numbers and Gazette numbers.
The platform also provides a register of marriage officers authorised to conduct civil or ordinance marriages, along with licensed marriage venues and Imams.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, encouraged prospective couples to verify information about their partners and the people and venues involved in their marriages.
“You would not have to take a person’s word for it, even in the most trusted relationship. You can verify with this app,” she said.
However, Marrify cautions that its records are still being uploaded, meaning a search that returns no result does not automatically prove that a person has never been married.
The platform also allows individuals and institutions to submit marriage and divorce records, alongside supporting documents, for verification.
