Licensure Exams to Be Fully Abolished by August 30, 2026

Richard Manuribe, a communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has clarified that teacher licensure examinations in Ghana will be completely abolished by August 30, 2026.

According to him, the decision forms part of a broader policy shift aimed at restructuring the teacher qualification system into a more efficient, practical, and sustainable framework.

Speaking on GHOne TV’s Breakfast Show on March 19, 2026, Manuribe emphasized that the process will not be abrupt but will follow a carefully planned and coordinated administrative transition. He noted that government has already begun implementing pragmatic measures to ensure a smooth and orderly phase-out of the current licensure system.

He further disclosed that all pending resit examinations will be conducted within the transition period to give affected candidates the opportunity to regularize their status. These processes are expected to be completed before the end of August 2026, ensuring that no candidate is left behind or unfairly affected.

Addressing public concerns, he explained that major policy changes of this nature require due process and must comply with established legal and administrative procedures. He cited the repeal of the E-Levy as a clear example, noting that although its abolition was announced earlier, implementation followed a structured timeline rather than taking immediate effect.

Manuribe assured the public that the transition is actively ongoing and should not be mistaken for delay. By the stated deadline, all issues relating to the licensure examinations will be fully resolved, paving the way for a reformed and more effective teacher certification system in Ghana.
