Iran’s air defence forces have shot down a Hermes-900 surveillance and attack drone before it could hit missile launchers inside Iranian territory, according to state broadcaster IRIB.
The Hermes-900, a long-range combat drone manufactured by Elbit Systems, was reportedly mostly recovered intact after being intercepted mid-air. Iranian forces also displayed boxes containing four “Mikholit” bombs, which they claim were attached to the aircraft for a planned strike.
WarContext
This incident comes amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, with the United States openly backing Israeli military operations in the region. In recent weeks, Israel and the U.S. have intensified aerial surveillance, targeted strikes, and military pressure on Iranian-linked sites.
Iran has repeatedly accused Israel and the U.S. of aggression, stating that their operations are deliberate attempts to weaken Iran’s missile capabilities. Tehran has warned that any violation of its airspace will be met with force.
What This Means
The downing of a Hermes-900 signals that Iran’s air defences remain active and responsive.
Recovery of the drone mostly intact could provide intelligence value.
The discovery of armed munitions suggests the mission was not just reconnaissance, but a potential strike operation.
Tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States continue to spiral, with each interception and strike pushing the region closer to broader confrontation.
