NTC Clarifies Eligibility of Level 400 Students for 2026 GTLE 1
The National Teaching Council (NTC) has provided clarification regarding whether Level 400 teacher trainees can participate in the 2026 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) 1.
According to the Council, only candidates who meet the stipulated academic requirements will be permitted to register and sit for the examination. The GTLE is conducted under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), which mandates the NTC to regulate the teaching profession in Ghana and license qualified teachers.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the 2026 GTLE 1, a candidate must possess:
- A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree, or
- A Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
This means that Level 400 students can only take part in the examination if they have successfully completed their programme and have been duly recommended by their institutions. Their details must also be uploaded onto the NTC indexing portal before registration.
Candidates with foreign qualifications are required to present a certificate evaluation report from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to confirm their eligibility.
Indexing Requirement
Before registering for the examination, fresh candidates must ensure that their training institutions have uploaded their details onto the NTC portal. Once confirmed, they are required to complete the indexing process and pay the prescribed indexing fee.
Re-sit candidates, however, are not required to undergo indexing again.
Examination Structure
All fresh candidates will write three papers:
- General Professional Knowledge
- Grade-Level Specialism Pedagogy
- Subject Content (either Multiple Subjects Content or Single Subject Specialism depending on training background)
Registration Fees
- Fresh candidates: GH¢450.00
- Re-sit (one paper): GH¢150.00
- Re-sit (two papers): GH¢210.00
- Re-sit (three papers): GH¢385.00
Candidates must complete their online registration before the stated deadline. The NTC has indicated that there will be no extension beyond the official closing date.
Examination Date
The 2026 GTLE 1 is scheduled to take place from 23rd to 25th March 2026.
The Council advises all prospective candidates, including Level 400 trainees, to confirm their eligibility status with their institutions before proceeding with payment to avoid disqualification or loss of funds.
