NTC Announces Registration Details for 2026 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) 1

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has officially opened registration for the 2026 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) 1, outlining eligibility requirements, fees, and important deadlines for prospective candidates.

Introduction

The NTC, under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), is mandated to regulate the teaching profession in Ghana. As part of its regulatory functions, the Council conducts licensure examinations for individuals seeking to enter the teaching profession.

The examination aims to ensure that qualified teachers meet the National Teachers’ Standards in professional knowledge, practice, values, and attitudes necessary for effective teaching in schools.

Form of the Examination

All fresh candidates will write three papers:

  1. General Professional Knowledge – covering numeracy, literacy, and essential professional skills.
  2. Grade-Level Specialism Pedagogy – differentiated by levels such as Early Grade/Early Childhood, Primary, JHS, SHS/SHTS, and Technical Vocational Schools.
  3. Multiple Subjects Content or Single Subject Content Knowledge (Subject Specialism)
    • Candidates trained for Early Grade/Early Childhood or Primary will write Multiple Subjects Content.
    • Candidates trained for Junior High, Senior High, or TVET will write one paper in their area of specialization.

Eligibility

A candidate is eligible to sit for the 2026 GTLE 1 only if he or she holds:

  • A Bachelor of Education Degree, or
  • A Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

Candidates with foreign degrees must provide a certificate evaluation report from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to prove their eligibility.

Indexing Process for Fresh Candidates

Fresh candidates must first confirm that their details have been uploaded onto the indexing portal by their training institutions via https://indexing.ntc.gov.gh.

  • If details have been uploaded, candidates will proceed with indexing before registering for the examination.
  • The indexing fee is GH¢50.00.
  • Re-sit candidates are not required to undergo the indexing process.

Payment can be made at any branch of Prudential Bank Ltd nationwide or through mobile money using the short code 77251# for Prudential Bank Ltd.

After successful payment, candidates will receive a message containing their indexing number and further instructions. Candidates must verify their details on the portal before using the indexing number to register for the examination.

Registration Fees

  • Fresh candidates: GH¢450.00 (for three papers)
  • Re-sit (one paper): GH¢150.00
  • Re-sit (two papers): GH¢210.00
  • Re-sit (three papers): GH¢385.00

Payment can be made at Prudential Bank Ltd or via the short code 77251#. After dialing the code, candidates should select “Teacher Licensure” and follow the prompts.

Candidates must log on to exams.ntc.gov.gh to complete registration and upload a passport-size photograph (less than 250kb with a white background).

Important Notes

  • Candidates should only make payment after their details have been uploaded onto the indexing portal.
  • Candidates without the minimum qualification of a degree cannot pay for indexing.
  • No refund will be issued to unqualified persons who make payment.
  • The NTC will not accept any request for change of photograph after the examination.
  • Candidates must review their information carefully before submission.
  • Three copies of the registration summary must be printed for entry into the examination hall (one copy per day).
  • Candidates must keep their PIN and Serial Numbers secure.
  • Online registration must be completed not later than 10th March 2026. There will be no extension.

Examination Date

The 2026 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) 1 will be conducted from 23rd to 25th March 2026.

The NTC further advises candidates to adhere strictly to all registration guidelines and examination regulations, including dressing formally or professionally and refraining from bringing babies to the examination hall.
