"Ofori-Atta Is Afraid to Return to Ghana" – Cousin Tells Ambassador to US

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is scared to return to Ghana.
According to him, the fear was made known through Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, who is Ofori-Atta’s cousin.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, Victor Smith said Gabby personally called him and explained that Ofori-Atta wants to come back home but is worried about what might happen to him if he does.

“Gabby called me and said Ken wants to come, but he is afraid of how he will be treated,” Victor Smith said.

Smith added that he told Gabby he wanted to meet Ofori-Atta and assure him that due process will be followed, stressing that the Attorney-General has already given that assurance..

ICE Calls Ofori-Atta an ‘Illegal Alien’

Meanwhile, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has officially described Ken Ofori-Atta as an illegal alien.
ICE says:
Ofori-Atta entered the U.S. on May 28, 2025
He was on a visitor’s visa.
The visa expired on November 27, 2025
He overstayed, which violates U.S. immigration law.

Because of this, ICE says he remains in custody and will go through the legal process.

Why He Was Arrested?
There have been different stories online about why Ofori-Atta was arrested.
Some say:
His visa was revoked
Others claim:
It is linked to Ghana’s request for his extradition
ICE, however, insists the issue is mainly about overstaying his visa, adding that Ofori-Atta is also facing corruption-related charges in Ghana.
