Minister of Education outlines comprehensive reform plans in education sector
The Ghanaian government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the country’s education sector. In a recent meeting with the Principals of Colleges of Education in Ghana (PRINCOF), Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu outlined a comprehensive plan to enhance learning outcomes and ensure equitable access to education nationwide.
To achieve this ambitious goal, the Minister proposed a multifaceted approach that prioritizes collaboration with key stakeholders. One of the key initiatives involves incorporating teacher licensing exams into the curriculum of teacher training institutions, thereby streamlining the teacher preparation process. This strategic move is expected to yield a more effective and efficient teaching workforce.
The Minister also announced plans to introduce national standardized tests in all public schools, commencing from primary two, four, six, and the second year of Junior High School. This initiative aims to improve examination readiness by focusing on students’ emotional, psychological, and academic preparedness. By doing so, the government seeks to create a more supportive and effective learning environment for students across the country.
Furthermore, the Minister acknowledged the need for infrastructure development and pledged to “un-cap” the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to allocate more resources for educational infrastructure. This move is expected to address the long-standing infrastructure challenges facing the education sector.
In addition, the government plans to transition from the current student allowance system to an enhanced student loan scheme. This new structure aims to provide students with more comprehensive financial support, enabling them to focus on their studies without undue financial burden.
The Minister also announced plans to host an Education Stakeholder Conference, which will provide a platform for various stakeholders to present their recommendations on improving the education sector. This inclusive approach underscores the government’s commitment to collaborative governance and its determination to harness the collective expertise of stakeholders to drive meaningful change in the education sector.
Ultimately, the Minister’s proposals demonstrate a forward-thinking approach to addressing the complex challenges facing Ghana’s education system. By prioritizing collaboration, innovation, and equity, the government seeks to create a more inclusive and effective education system that empowers students to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
