The Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr. Christian Opoku-Addai, has revealed that the government of the United Kingdom (UK) has granted an exemption to recruit teachers from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
Dr. Opoku-Addai, the Registrar for the teacher regulatory authority, NTC, revealed this critical information at the GBC programme "Talking Point" on June 25th, 2023.
He stated that the United Kingdom (UK) has given preference to instructors from African countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe since they have the best teachers who can work for the UK.
He went on to say that Ghanaian teachers are held in high regard because, in the last four (4) editions of the Africa Union's Best Teachers Awards, Ghana has finished third out of the four (4) events.
Dr. Addai went on to say that Ghanaian teachers are known for receiving the best training from institutes that certify instructors.
Previously, the NTC reported that 7,728 prospective teachers sat for their GTLE resit papers, but that almost 6,000 of them (re-sitters) failed and 1,277 of them passed.
Concerning the batch that wrote the papers, the PRO present at the programme stated, "These are the people who sat for the exams." Only 1,277 people passed the examinations; they are the only ones who did not have a deficit. The examinations were passed by 16.5% of them.
"We have people going to classrooms to teach our future generations, and if I tell you the kind of things some of them wrote, you ask what kind of training they had in their various training institutions before they came here."
"Everything indicates that the majority of them are not prepared to be teachers; they simply want to learn about the system."
