SECTIONA

COMPOSITION

(25 MARKs)

Answer ONE question from this section. Your essay should be about 300 words.

1. You are the lead speaker in a debate on the motion the "Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) should be abolished". Write your speech for or against the motion.

Solution

For the motion:

Dear ladies and gentlemen, good day. We're here today to talk about whether or not the CSSPS, or computerized school selection and placement system, should be eliminated.

I firmly believe that the CSSPS has done more harm than good to our educational system, and I support this motion. The CSSPS was established to make sure that every junior high school graduate was assigned to a senior high school based on their scholastic standing and top choices.

However, the CSSPS has faced numerous difficulties over the years. One of the system's most serious flaws is its inability to match students with their chosen schools. This has resulted in many students being assigned to schools they do not want to attend, leading them to become demotivated and disinterested in their studies.

Furthermore, the CSSPS has led to some schools being overcrowded and others being underutilized. As a result, some schools are unable to accommodate all of the students assigned to them, resulting in a shortage of essential amenities such as desks, chairs, and textbooks. Simultaneously, other institutions are underutilized, resulting in underfunding and a lack of resources.

Finally, the CSSPS has resulted in many students being denied entry to senior high schools. As a result, many talented students have been denied the chance to further their education and achieve their full potential.

Finally, it is clear that the CSSPS has failed to fulfill its mission of ensuring that every student is put in a senior high school based on academic achievement and preferred schools. As a result, I encourage you to support this motion and call for the repeal of the CSSPS.

Against the motion:

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. I am here to speak in opposition to the motion to repeal the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

The CSSPS was created, first and foremost, to guarantee transparency and fairness in the selection and placement of students in senior high schools. Prior to the CSSPS, the selection and placement process was rife with bias and favoritism, resulting in a scenario in which only a select few were able to gain admission to the top schools.

Second, the CSSPS has improved the efficiency and timeliness of the selection and placement procedures. Students can now obtain their placement results in a matter of weeks, as opposed to the months it used to take prior to the implementation of the CSSPS.

Furthermore, the CSSPS has aided in the abolition of the practice of parents and guardians using their connections to obtain admission for their children to prestigious schools. This has ensured that every student, regardless of academic performance, has an equal chance to gain admission to the school of their choosing.

Finally, the CSSPS has contributed to the transparency, fairness, and efficiency of the senior high school selection and placement procedure. As a result, I encourage you to reject this motion and continue to use the CSSPS. Thank you very much.

2 Many of the students in your college have complained about the challenges they go through with the Supporting Teaching in School (STS) component of the programme. As the president of the SRC in your college, write a letter to your principal suggesting ways by which the college can assist the students to overcome the challenges.

Solution

Dear [Name of Principal],

I hope this message finds you in good health. As president of the Student Representative Council (SRC), I am writing to you on behalf of the students at our institution who are experiencing difficulties with the program's Supporting Teaching in School (STS) component.

Many of our students have expressed concerns and difficulties with this part of the curriculum, leaving some feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. As an institution dedicated to offering quality education and ensuring the success of our students, we think it is critical to address these issues and provide assistance to those in need.

We would like to recommend the following strategies for assisting students in overcoming obstacles: Provide extra assistance and direction. Students who are struggling with the STS component of the program would benefit from extra help and guidance from the college. Extra classes or workshops on particular subjects, one-on-one tutoring, or access to online resources could be included.

Increase the number of practical chances Many students have reported difficulty with the STS component due to a lack of practical experience in a classroom environment. More chances for students to acquire practical experience through internships, shadowing programs, or volunteering in local schools would be beneficial if the college could provide more of them.

Create a mentorship program: A mentorship program could be created to allow students to receive advice and support from experienced teachers. This could provide students with insight into the profession as well as advice on how to overcome particular challenges they may encounter.

Encourage student cooperation.
Collaboration among students can also be a useful tool in overcoming difficulties with the STS component of the curriculum. The college could form study groups or pair students together to work on STS-related tasks and projects.

We hope that the college will consider these ideas as a way to help students overcome the challenges that the STS component of the program presents. We are confident that with the college's assistance, our students will be able to achieve and excel in their academic endeavors.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

COMPREHENSION

(15 Marks)

Read the passage below and answer the questions which follow.

When the meeting began again, someone suggested that they should go to the elders of Umuaro and tell them that they could no longer work on the white man's road. But as speaker after speaker revealed the implication of such a step, it lost all support. Moses told them that the white will reply by taking all their leaders to prison at Okperi.

"You all know how friendly we are with Okperi'" said Unachukwu, "do you think that any Umuaro man who goes to prison there will come back alive? But do you forget that this is the month of planting? Do you want to grow this year's crops in prison in a land where your father owes a cow? I speak as your elder brother. I have travelled in Igbo and I can tell you there is no escape from the white man. He has come. When suffering knocks at your door and you say there is no seat left for

him, he tells you not to worry because he has come with his own stool. The white man is like that.

Before any of you here was old enough to put a cloth between the legsI saw with my own eyes

what the white man did to Abame. Then I knew there was no escape. As day-light chases away

darkness, so will the white man drive away all our customs. I know that as I say it now, it passes by

your ears but it will happen. The white man has power which comes from the true God, and it burns

like fire. This is the God about whom we preach every eight days."

Unachukwu's opponents were now shouting that they had not assembled to join in chewing the seed of foolishness which they now called their new religion. "We are talking about the white man's road," said a voice above the other. "Yes, we are talking about the white man's road, but when the roof and walls of a house fall in, the ceiling is not left standing. The white man, the new religion, the soldiers, the new road - they are all part of the same thing. The white man has a gun, a machete and a bow that carries fire in its mouth. He does not fight with one weapon alone."

Nweke Ukpaka spoke next. "What a man does not know is greater than him. Those of us who want Unachukwu to go away, should not forget that none of us can say come in the white man's language. We should listen to his advice. If we go to our elders and tell them that we shall no longer work on the white man's road, what do we expect them to do? Will our fathers take up hoes and machetes and go out to work themselves while we sit at home? I know that many of us want to fight

the white man. But only a foolish man can go after the leopard with his bare hands."

a. Quote a sentence from the passage to support the fact that Unachukwu was older than everybody at the meeting.

b. Why was Unachukwu eventually allowed to stay'?

c. Why was the decision to stop work on the white man's road abandoned?

d. "You all know how friendly we are with Okperi.

b. Unachukwu was allowed to stay due to his argument that stopping work on the white man's road would have dire consequences.

c. Unachukwu argued that stopping work on the white man's road would lead to the death of Umuaro people.

ii. Jane's raincoat, with all the rips and tears, provide little protection.

ii. The boss together with her secretary eat lunch at the same time.

(3 marks)

Solution

i. One of my best friends has been suspended. (The subject "one" is singular and requires a singular verb "has" instead of "have".)

ii. Jane's raincoat, with all the rips and tears, provides little protection. (The subject "raincoat" is singular and requires a singular verb "provides" instead of "provide".)

iii. The boss, together with her secretary, eats lunch at the same time. (The subject "boss" is singular and requires a singular verb "eats" instead of "eat". Also, since the subject is a compound subject joined by "together with", it requires the verb to agree with the closest subject, which is "boss".)

e. Re-write the following sentences correcting all errors.

i. Teenagers who stay out all night sometimes should be punished.

i. The burglar threatened the student with the knife.

ii. The professor said on Monday he would give an exam.

(3 marks)

Solution

i. Teenagers who stay out all night should sometimes be punished. (The adverb "sometimes" should be placed before the verb "should be punished".)

ii. The burglar threatened the student with a knife. (The indefinite article "a" should be used instead of "the" because it is not previously mentioned.)

iii. On Monday, the professor said he would give an exam. (The adverbial phrase "on Monday" should be placed at the beginning of the sentence for clarity. The subject "professor" should be followed by the verb "said", and the pronoun "he" should refer to the subject of the sentence, which is the professor.)

f. Change the following from indirect to direct speech.

i.Yaa requested them to wait there till she returned.

ii. Adwoa said to me that I was her only friend.

iii. Kwame said that it gave him great pleasure to be with us that evening.

(4 marks)

Solution

i. "Wait there till I return," YaaYaa requested them.

ii. "You are my only friend," Adwoa said to me.

iii. "It gives me great pleasure to be with you this evening," Kwame said.

iv. "If you work hard, you will pass the examination," the teacher said.

The sentences given in indirect speech describe what someone else said. Direct speech, on the other hand, quotes the exact words that someone else said.

To change a sentence from indirect to direct speech, you need to remove the introductory clause ("YaaYaa requested", "Adwoa said to me", "Kwame said", "The teacher said that") and use quotation marks to indicate the exact words that were spoken.

In the examples provided, each sentence is changed from indirect to direct speech by using the quote marks and eliminating the introductory phrase.
