A disturbing video circulating online has raised serious concerns about alleged corruption within law enforcement at illegal mining sites.
At Abura Dunkwa in the Central Region, a man identified as Don Lapeans, believed to be a galamsey operator, recorded what appears to be a police officer collecting money from him and others working at the site.
In the footage, the officer is seen taking cash reportedly in GH₵200 notes while issuing a clear warning:
those who cannot pay should leave the mining site.
The video suggests a possible “pay-to-operate” system, where access to the illegal mining area is allegedly controlled through cash payments.

If verified, the incident points to:
Possible abuse of power by law enforcement
Undermining of the fight against illegal mining (galamsey)
A system that may allow unlawful activity to continue unchecked
Galamsey remains one of Ghana’s most critical environmental and economic challenges, with ongoing efforts by authorities to clamp down on illegal operations.
What Happens Next?
The authenticity of the video and the identity of the officer will likely be key to any investigation.
Public pressure is expected to mount for:
A full probe into the incident
Accountability if wrongdoing is confirmed
Stronger oversight at mining sites
