About 30,000 SHS Graduates May Get Chance to Re-sit WASSCE Mathematics – Education Minister
The Minister for Education in Ghana, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that about 30,000 Senior High School (SHS) graduates may be given the opportunity to re-sit the Core Mathematics paper of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The initiative is intended to support students who were unable to obtain the required pass in mathematics, which is a key requirement for admission into many tertiary institutions.
According to the Minister, the move forms part of efforts by the government to provide a second chance for qualified students whose academic progress has been affected by poor performance in Core Mathematics. Mathematics remains one of the compulsory subjects required for university and college admissions, and many students often miss opportunities because they fail to obtain the minimum grade.
The proposed opportunity is expected to benefit approximately 30,000 SHS graduates who sat for the WASSCE examination but did not pass Core Mathematics. These students, once given the chance to re-sit the examination, may improve their results and meet the entry requirements for tertiary institutions.
The Minister noted that the government is committed to improving access to education and ensuring that capable students are not left behind due to challenges in a single subject. He added that discussions are ongoing with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to determine how the special re-sit examination will be organized and implemented.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could provide thousands of students with another opportunity to qualify for tertiary education, reduce the number of students unable to progress academically, and improve access to universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions.
The proposal reflects broader efforts to expand educational opportunities in Ghana and support students who are determined to continue their academic journey despite previous setbacks.
