Ghana has lost one of its biggest gospel music legends.
Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the famous Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo group, has passed away. He died on Monday, January 20, 2026, in Kumasi.
His manager, Nana Poku Ashis, confirmed the sad news.
A Double Blow to Gospel Music
His death comes just one month after Maame Tiwa, a strong pillar of the Asomafo group, also passed away. Two heavy losses in a short time have shaken the gospel music space.
He Had Been Battling Illness
Yaw Sarpong had been unwell for years. Because of his health, he reduced public appearances and performances while focusing on treatment.
A True Gospel Giant
Yaw Sarpong is widely seen as one of the most influential gospel musicians Ghana has ever produced.
With Asomafo, he helped shape Akan gospel music as we know it today — deep lyrics, strong Christian messages, and strict discipline.
Some of his evergreen songs include:
Wo Haw Ne Sen
Awurade Kasa
These songs are still played in churches across Ghana today.
Honoured Before His Death
In 2025, Yaw Sarpong received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, recognising his massive impact on gospel music.
Gone, But Never Forgotten
Yaw Sarpong may be gone, but his music and legacy will live on for generations.
Rest in peace, legend.
