The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a man who was captured in a widely circulated video brutally assaulting a woman believed to be his wife at Ofankor in the Ga East Municipality.
The suspect, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, was picked up on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the family residence following public outrage over the disturbing footage that went viral over the weekend.
In a related development, two of the suspect’s siblings – Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey – were also arrested after they allegedly attempted to attack a female tenant suspected of recording and sharing the assault video. Police intervened and rescued the tenant to ensure her safety.
According to the police press release issued on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the victim (the wife) had fled the house before officers arrived at the scene.
Efforts are currently underway to locate her and provide the necessary protection and support.
The arrests come barely 24 hours after the video sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many Ghanaians calling for swift police action against domestic violence.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators face the full rigours of the law,” the statement said.
All three suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. They are expected to be arraigned soon.
