The President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH), King Ali Awudu, has addressed key concerns affecting teachers in Ghana. Speaking in a Zoom meeting on February 28, 2025, moderated by the CCT Communication Officer, he touched on critical issues such as the CPD allowance, appointment revocations, promotions, and base pay negotiations.
If you are a teacher or an education stakeholder, here’s everything you need to know about the latest developments.
CPD Allowance: What You Must Know
King Ali Awudu emphasized that every teacher is required to accumulate 20 CPD points annually. To support this, the government deducts GH¢200 from the CPD allowance for two main purposes:
1. Virtual Training for Teachers: GES will provide online training sessions.
2. In-Person Training: Resource personnel will be deployed to circuits and schools for direct engagement.
This new training system will begin in March 2025. Teachers should prepare for the shift and stay informed on how to gain their required CPD points.
Base Pay Negotiations: The Truth Behind the 10% Increment
One of the most pressing concerns for teachers has been salary increments. According to King Ali Awudu, the initial offer from the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, was only 5%. However, after intense negotiations, former President John Dramani Mahama intervened, leading to a final agreement of 10% for public sector workers.
Although this increment is still considered insufficient, the union remains committed to pushing for better salaries in future negotiations.
Appointment Revocations: What Affected Teachers Should Do
A wave of appointment revocations has left many teachers frustrated. The CCT-GH President condemned the government’s decision and reassured affected teachers that the Union is actively working to restore their appointments.
He advised all teachers whose appointments were revoked on November 8, 2024, to remain at post while CCT-GH continues engagements with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Upgrading and Promotions: A Call to Action
For many teachers, delayed promotions remain a major setback. King Ali Awudu instructed all Regional Chairpersons to engage their respective Regional Directors to ensure:
Timely processing of promotions.
Fast-tracking the upgrading of teachers who qualify.
Teachers are encouraged to follow up on their applications and report any delays to their respective regional CCT-GH representatives.
Final Thoughts: What’s Next for Teachers?
The latest update from the CCT-GH President highlights the ongoing struggles and advocacy efforts in Ghana’s education sector. While some progress has been made, teachers must stay informed and continue to push for better working conditions.
If you’re a teacher affected by these issues, ensure you stay connected with your local union representatives for more updates and guidance.
