CLOGSAG, the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana, has declared a nationwide strike in protest of the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry. The association claims Botchway is a "politically exposed person," and his appointment undermines the integrity of the Civil Service and Local Government.¹
The decision to strike was made during a National Executive Council meeting on February 11, 2025, where members expressed concerns about the trend of appointing individuals with political ties to key roles within the Civil Service and Local Government.² CLOGSAG had warned that if Botchway assumed office, they would take industrial action.
As Botchway officially took office on February 12, 2025, CLOGSAG announced that the strike would begin on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The association has directed all its members to stay at home until further notice.³
CLOGSAG's strike is aimed at protesting the appointment of politically exposed individuals to crucial roles in the Civil Service and Local Government, which they believe compromises the neutrality and integrity of these institutions.⁴
