In a dispute over salaries, Ghanaian colleges' teachers affiliated with CETAG are not getting paid this month. The government agency responsible for funding universities (GTEC) directed the department that handles payroll (Controller and Accountant General's Department) to withhold July salaries of all CETAG members. This comes after CETAG went on strike in June, which the education ministry considers illegal.
The directive to halt salaries was signed by an official at GTEC on behalf of the director. College principals were also told not to approve the salaries for CETAG members in July. Only college principals will receive their salaries.
GTEC urged CETAG members to return to work and comply with the education ministry's request to end the strike.
However, CETAG insists their strike is legal and they will not return to work until the government meets their demands.
