Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member of Ghana's Education Committee in Parliament, has announced plans to escalate pressure on Education Minister Adutwum to address critical challenges facing the education sector.
Nortsu-Kotoe emphasized the committee's intention to bring these issues to the public's attention amid frustrations over the Minister's absence from parliamentary sessions.
The Akatsi North MP highlighted the government's alleged outstanding debt of over 6 billion Ghana Cedis related to the Free Senior High School policy, which the Minority views as needing urgent clarification.
Speaking with Citi News, Nortsu-Kotoe expressed concern over the Minister's repeated non-appearance before the committee to address pertinent queries.
"We have realized that whenever these issues arise or when the government delays, it's only through our proactive engagement that progress is made" he remarked.
Nortsu-Kotoe cited an instance where the Minister failed to attend a session on the Basic Education Certificate Examination, delegating the matter to a deputy minister, which he deemed inadequate. "We insist that the Minister himself appear before the committee," he asserted.
"As the Minority, we have decided to elevate these concerns into the public domain to highlight the challenges faced and prompt the government to take decisive action" Nortsu-Kotoe added.
The Education Committee's stance underscores growing legislative scrutiny over educational policy implementation in Ghana, signalling heightened accountability efforts in the sector.
