"Dr. Apaak Urges Government to Fulfill Commitments to Lecturers"
In a stirring call to action, Builsa South Member of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has urged the government to promptly address the grievances of lecturers, facilitating their return to the classroom. The indefinite strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), which began on June 14, 2024, threatens to derail the academic progress of students and disrupt the entire educational calendar.
CETAG members, frustrated by the government's delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and agreed-upon service conditions, have been instructed to withdraw from all teaching and related services until their demands are met. The strike underscores a critical issue: the government's failure to enforce an arbitration award from the NLC concerning the shift from diploma-awarding teacher training colleges to degree-awarding institutions.
Dr. Apaak, who also serves as the Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, highlighted the urgency of resolving this impasse. "Our colleges of education lecturers have been on strike since June 14, 2024, with no end in sight," he stated. "This strike, driven by the government's refusal to implement the arbitration award, if not resolved soon, will severely disrupt students' progress and the academic calendar."
With the future of education hanging in the balance, Dr. Apaak's impassioned plea emphasizes the need for the government to fulfill its obligations swiftly. The academic community awaits decisive action to bring an end to the CETAG strike and restore normalcy to the colleges of education across the country.
